What are the core functions of a silicon steel sheet roll coater?
A silicon steel sheet roll coater (also known as electrical steel roll coating equipment) is a key piece of machinery in silicon steel continuous annealing production lines. It is used to uniformly apply magnesium oxide release coatings, chromium‑free insulating coatings, or self‑bonding coatings on both the top and bottom surfaces of oriented or non‑oriented silicon steel strips. The coating liquid is transferred by roller sets, with precise film thickness control. After coating, the silicon steel is baked and cured to form an insulating protective layer. This equipment is widely used in production lines for transformer and motor core raw materials.

Working principle:
The silicon steel strip passes at a constant speed between the upper and lower applicator rollers. The coating material is delivered to the roller nip by a circulation pump. The amount of coating carried is controlled by the gap between the metering roller and the applicator roller, as well as the difference in roller speeds, ensuring uniform transfer onto the high‑speed moving steel strip surfaces. Excess coating liquid returns to the coating tank for recycling.
By adjusting the nip pressure, roller speed ratio, and roller gap, the coating thickness can be precisely controlled (typically 0.5–8 μm). After coating, the strip enters an oven for drying and curing, forming a continuous and uniform insulating film.
So, what are the core functions of a silicon steel sheet roll coater that make it a worthwhile choice?
-
Application of insulating coatings
-
-
For non‑oriented silicon steel: applies insulating varnish to reduce eddy current losses in the iron core and improve motor efficiency.
-
For oriented silicon steel: applies a magnesium oxide coating that prevents strip sticking during high‑temperature annealing and simultaneously forms a magnesium silicate insulating sub‑layer, optimising magnetic properties.
-
-
Uniform and stable coating quality
-
Ensures consistent film thickness across the entire width and length of the steel strip, eliminating defects such as missed coating, uneven thickness, sagging, and streaking.
-
Suitable for continuous high‑speed production lines
-
Compatible with the entire annealing unit for continuous, uninterrupted coil coating, thereby increasing production capacity.
-
Reduction of coating material waste
-
The closed‑loop circulation and recovery system reduces raw material consumption and improves workshop cleanliness by minimising dust and contamination.
